CB&Q Depot at Galesburg, Illinois
Title:  CB&Q Depot at Galesburg, Illinois
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad depot at Galesburg, Illinois, date and photographer unknown, print scanned from Chuck Zeiler collection. This was the third depot the CB&Q built in Galesburg. My guess is the photo date was shortly after the construction was completed and the structure was formally dedicated in 1913. The following is excerpted from the Burlington Route Historical Society's Bulletin Number 37, entitled BURLINGTON BOXES (referring the the shape of Burlington's large depot buildings), edited by Hol Wagner.

Even as Burlington officials were approving construction of the new depot at Sheridan ( Wyoming ), they were suddenly and unexpectedly faced with an immediate need for a new depot and division office building at Galesburg, the bustling hub of Lines East, for on April 27, 1911, the classic Victorian brick depot there ( Galesburg's second Burlington depot, complete with a striking but purely ornamental tower that made it one of the city's tallest structures ) was gutted by fire, leaving nothing standing but a shell of scorched brick walls.

Noted architect Heny Raeder was retained to design the replacement structure. Two stories tall, but topped by a low, tiled-covered hip roof that made it appear tall, the depot measured an impressive 64 feet 3 inches wide and 233 feet long, its footprint encompassing 14,800 square feet. Constructed of brownish red brick manufactured locally by Purington Brick Company ( best known for the brick pavers used on Line East depot platforms ) the structure was erected just north of the Seminary and South Street site of the old depot, and its construction occupied the latter part of 1911 and virtually all of 1912. Completed at a cost of estimated by the railroad at $150,000.00 - plus and by local sources at closer to $225,000.00, the new depot was formally dedicated in early 1913.

By the time the Burlington Northern was created in 1970, the Galesburg Division no longer existed, and all Lines East dispatching had been done from a consolidated facility near Clyde Yard near Cicero, Illinois for two years. A building as large as the 622,000 cubic-foot Galesburg depot was costly to maintain and expensive to heat in the winter, particularly for the minimal use the railroad was getting from it. Consequently as the BN began developing plans for an $80 million expansion and modernization of its facilities in Galesburg - plans that would include razing the power plant that furnished steam to heat the depot - the 1912 building became a liability to the railroad. The city wanted to save the structure and investigated ways this might be accomplished. But in the end, the building's great size was its own downfall. Even if the railroad had given the structure to the city, heating and maintaining it in its current condition would have been prohibitively expensive. And renovating it, installing a new heating system, and bringing the other utilities up to code, would have been just as costly, with all the expense incurred up front before any of the benefits could be realized. Consequently, with little advance warning, the railroad undertook demolition of the historic structure in May 1983, 71 years after the massive depot entered service, and Galesburg lost a major landmark.

CB&Q PMC 9845
Title:  CB&Q PMC 9845
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad Class PMC (Passenger Motor Car) 9845 at Maryville, Missouri on September 24, 1957, photo by Dick Rumbolz, Chuck Zeiler collection. My only choice on this site was Pullman-Standard as the builder and ACMU as the model. Neither is entirely correct. The body was built July 1928 by Pullman Car (In 1934 Pullman Car & Manufacturing merged with Standard Steel Car Co. to form the Pullman-Standard Car Manufacturing Company). It was delivered as number 845 and renumbered in 1930, when the 275 horsepower gasoline engine was replaced with a diesel from Electro-Motive Corporation. It was classed as a PMC on the CB&Q, (Passenger Motor Car) and finally scrapped in August 1961. Hand written on the slide mount was a notation that this is Train #30, which may or may not be correct. I recall train #30 being a Denver to Billings train, but I'm working from both memory (not always accurate) and a 1965 timetable. According to the 1965 timetable, Train #85 ran on Tuesday and Friday (9/24/1957 was a Tuesday) between St. Joseph, Missouri and Creston, Iowa, arriving in Maryville at 12:05 PM. The following is a comment from Brian Woodruff (thanks, Brian), which helps clarify the train number: "I have a 1954 Official Guide which does show the Creston to St. Joseph motor train as No. 30. While the Guide also lists a Billings to Denver train No. 30, that was technically a Colorado & Southern train. Also, in 1954, train No. 30 was due in Maryville at 8:55 am, and I'm thinking the length of the shadows in your pic look more like 9 AM than noon."

CB&Q PMC 9845
Title:  CB&Q PMC 9845
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad PMC 9845 at Lenox, Iowa, north of Saint Joseph, Missouri, on an unknown day in October 1957, Kodachrome by Dick Rumbolz, Chuck Zeiler collection. Gas-electrics were classed as PMC (Passenger Motor Car) by the Burlington, although drawings of this number series also show Class ED-3B. This particular PMC was built in July 1928 as 845, body by Pullman, power plant by Electro-Motive Corporation (c/n 279) driving Westinghouse electrical gear. The number 9 was prefixed to all the PMC numbers in the 1930's, and thus this one became 9845. Originally powered by a EMC Model 120 - 275 horsepower gasoline engine coupled to a DC generator, the power plant was later replaced with a 400 hp diesel. This PMC was scrapped in August 1961.

PRRZ 550022
Title:  PRRZ 550022
Description:  PRRZ 550022 at Lincoln, Nebraska on February 8, 1963, photo by Jim C. Seacrest, Chuck Zeiler collection. I'm guessing that Jim either submitted this photo or intended to submit it for publication because there is a detailed description attached to the back of the print which reads as follows:

On February 8, 1963 CB&Q passenger train local east #8 carries meat behind the passenger consist in three different types of cars; regular refirgerator car, container on flats (new for the CB&Q), and piggyback. Once in a while meat from Lincoln, Nebraska meatpackers misses the connection to Omaha and Q's new solid meat train to Chicago. So, to fulfill its contract, the Q takes the Lincoln meat up to Omaha on the back of one of its passenger trains. If the meat still misses its Omaha connection, then it rides with Q's passenger #8 all the way to Chicago. On the day this pix was taken, there were ten cars of meat plus a waycar (caboose) behind the passenger train out of Lincoln. So far, this rare event happens once ot twice a month. Editors note: The lower keystone on the front of the trailer reads: ETLC EXCELSIOR TRUCK LEASING CO.

Title:  CB&Q E8 9974
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E8 9974 eastbound at Naperville, Illinois on March 12, 1965, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. There is a distortion in the paint on the nose running vertically to the right of the headlight and over to the grab iron. At first I thought it was a dent, then I figured out it was the shadow of a pole behind me. Also note the replacement MU plug cover to the left of the upper headlight. The CB&Q was pretty good about keeping up appearances, and this locomotive would likely visit the paint shop soon so the missing stripes can be applied.

Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 2-8-2 Class O-1-A 4960 at Denrock, Illinois on July 17, 1966, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Sorry, I forgot my butt filter. This was the last CB&Q steam fan trip, from Chicago to Denrock and return. The train was wyed in Denrock and returned to Chicago, and the steam powered fan trip era ended. I counted all my CB&Q 4960 fan trip slides and I shot 267 slides, plus a few dozen more photos in black and white. You won't see all 267 images. Many of the images were sequence shots of photo runbys. Some images only show a plume of smoke and tracks.

CB&Q F3 160A
Title:  CB&Q F3 160A
Description:  The Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad depot at Barstow, Illinois, was located in the middle of a wye, seen here on August 28, 1966, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Also pictured is CB&Q F3 160A on Train #88. My friend Chris Burritt passed away on January 7, 2008, and I started looking at photos I have that may have him in them, and they bring back memories. He is pictured here in the shadows of the depot, performing the roll-by inspection of the train, as required by his job. This train movement was called a saw-by. Train #88 fit into the siding, but the other train (with the Great Northern car) did not. So #88 pulled into the siding short of the switch at the other end. The other train then pulled forward behind #88 and continued, dragging its rear end clear of #88.

Here is another story to go with this photo. Folks who know Chris probably know him for his film work, but he also held a job on the CB&Q railroad in the summer of 1966. I tagged along as Chris worked at Galva, Barstow, and Moline, Illinois as a relief telegraph operator, substituting for the regular operators as they took their vacation time off. We would sit in the station at Galva, Chris would be in communication with the train dispatcher, and would write train orders and hand them up to passing trains using a hoop (actually, a Y-shaped device). The trains didn't stop, and it was Chris's duty to stand close to the tracks and hold the hoop in such a fashion that a crew member could reach out of the passing train and grab the orders. This would happen twice per train, the locomotive crew and the conductor behind would both need to grab orders, so Chris had to throw the first hoop aside after the first set of orders were picked up and get the second hoop into position. This produced a lot of excitement in a short period of time, usually followed by a few hours of utter boredom as nothing happened until the next train passed. One of the interesting things we did to pass the time was to make wagers as to when the next milk can would explode. Local farmers would bring their milk to the station in Galva in those large cans that are now collectible antiques. If the farmer was late and missed the train, the cans would sit out in the sun most of the day. On a really hot day, the top would blow off a can from the pressure of heated milk, and the station and platform would be covered in some of the foulest smelling substance we ever experienced. It certainly wasn't milk when it erupted from the can. Just to survive, we hosed the mess down with water. When Chris was assigned to Galva, we would eat at the local diner. There we met two young women, and struck up an acquaintance. Although we were both 18 at the time, neither of us knew what to do next. Chris was more worldly, since he went to a co-ed high school. But I was in prep school at the time, studying to be a Benedictine Monk. That didn't pan out, but I didn't know it at the time of this photo. In fact, the few weeks spent with Chris on the railroad that summer probably changed the course of my life.

Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad E9 9989A on train number 11, the Nebraska Zephyr, westbound at Galva, Illinois on August 28, 1966, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This was one of those situations I'm sure we have all had; the sun was shining brightly until train time, at which point a cloud rolled in to wreck my perfectly lit scene.
